Vikings on TV in The Netherlands

Fox the Dutch unpaid tv channel has announced season 4A will start on the 23rd of April.
This means that I will try to keep my blog up to date again. I have seen the season and found out it could be a hell of a job to get the mythology right, but I will give it a try.

Vikings: SPOILERS season 4B episode 11 The outsider

I am back and so is Vikings. Before I start to tell you how I found the première of Vikings season 4B. I will tell you this is only once. Please give it time because in The Netherlands the première will be somewhere in January at Film 1 paid cable television. Dates yet to announces so keep watching this space for more info.

Welcome to a new episode of Vikings. I was wondering what to expect for this first episode. I have seen so many scenes already so it couldn't surprise me just yet. Nevertheless, I have loved the first episode.

If it comes to mythology I'm pleased to see that Ragnar took it to the next level in comparing him to Odin by hanging himself to the tree. Even Odin refused him to die is another explanation.The scene with Floki is also about dead it seems it is still the theme of the episodes. 

Even when the sons of Ragnar, dared by Ragnar to kill him no one stands up at that moment. It seems if Ubbe tried but didn´t it was nice to see that he stepped up. 

Ivar seems to have the same emotion as Ragnar, only Ivar got them stronger in the scene when he is making love to Margrethe we see every emotion coming by and that without a single word it was magical. Ivar has a mixture of strength within him that no one expect. In the forest scene, later we see that the only one who expect him to be that strong is after he threw the axe to is Hvitserk.

Vikings: How to recognize a trading partner in the Viking period

When I went to the Museum Meermanno the museum itself is about books. So when I got asked to go to a reading about graphic I didn´t expect the outcome of that reading. It was about the Chinese art Kai-awase Symbolon. those based on a love story where you get one-half of a shell and you need to find the other half. It is like memory but there is a difference both shells have different paintings inside. But enough about that. What has this to do with Vikings or trading I will tell you.

We know that in the time of the Vikings they had coins. In The Netherlands, they found half a coin or a quarter coin. This brings me to the story of the trading partner and the reading that I went to. At the reading, they told the coins had a real trading system at that time.

If you got a piece of land that you bought from a trading partner, and you have particular agreements with that partner, for instance, he kept the watch over your land while you were gone, how did he keep his promise to watch over the land? How did you know it was the right trading partner? How did they do that in those times?

The answer is given in this way: They cut the coins in half or quarter. If you got half or quarter a coin in your possession and the trading partner has half or three-quarter a coin it fits into a whole coin. So if you came back and you showed them the piece of the coin they could easily fit it. If it fits the agreement was that it was given back to you. 

This was also with family how to recognize family when not together or from another country it was your identification coin that would show if someone died or came to visit.   

Vikings: My journey to the Vikings in The Netherlands

I learned a lot today about history. I went to Utrecht (Trajectum in the time of the Vikings). I went to an archeological find under the Dom Tower and church. Everything I write about is from the tourguide point of view. The first thing we found out that there where archeological finds earlier but it wasn't relevant at that time so they destroyed it or threw it away. That is why there is not so much to be found about Vikings. It answered my question from last week. Archeologists did find a lot about the period before the Vikings. That is why the Dutch learn about the Roman period and then go on to the 17th century.

In The Netherlands, there was a difference between the Frisia culture and the ones that lived below Trajectum. Frisia wasn't that important according to the people who lived below Trajectum. Why because Frisia was poor and where farmers. Trajectum was rich. Trajectum had his first Heathen church build around 300 they assume. When Christianity came they placed a Christian church above a heathen church. Like we see in most countries what happened when Christianity took over. Now that church has the style gothic. But it all started with a roman fortress. We know that Ubbe was called Duke of Frisia. (From blog 17-05-2016)

But back to the Vikings we know from different books about that period that Vikings have been coming from the side of Frisia until they went to Paris they came from the North side of The Netherlands before Paris. After Paris, they came through Germany and Belgium. When they came from the north they are described as Barbarians or Pirates. When they came out Germany and Belgium they assumed it where traders.

They found two skeletons in their burial and they are eager to find out who they are because they aren't allowed just yet. Permission to go on with the digging and to find out more isn't there yet, this is because they are experimenting with how to preserve the digging in a way that everyone is able to visit it. Unfortunately, they don't know yet how. They actually hope to dig the whole Roman period but if they are allowed to dig further maybe they will find a little more about the attack from the Vikings in and around the church. They have layers of ground they dig for the first time and those layers of ground could prove something totally different and could show us what truly happened. They dig from donations.

SPOILERS Ivar season 4 part 1 recap

Where Aslaug is Ivar is to be seen most of the time. We see a little fragile child at first but when we see him in the time before Yule when Ragnar wants him to decorate like the other children he refuses to do that. When Aslaug and Ragnar get a fight about him Ragnar refuses to tread him like a cripple where Aslaug tries to get him as spoiled as possible.

Ivar has an own mind and this turns him into something different then the other children of Aslaug and Ragnar. When Harbard returns to Kattegat he take away the pain of Ivar once more. 

Aslaug ask Floki to teach him about the gods and how to be a Viking he gets to see Ivar every day. If children are playing outside Ivar wants to play when Floki puts him in between the children Ivar at first lose the battle about the ball when he gets it. The second time it happens we see Ivar do something different he kills the child when he is about six years old.

When we see Ivar again he is grown-up. What we see is Ivar defending his father and we see a big difference between him and his brothers. He is the one that only believes Ragnar did what he had to do and that he is still their father. Curious and admiring his father he wants him to return to Kattegat.

If Ragnar arrives in Kattegat and first speak to Ivar, we see Ivar grow and the acknowledgement he gets is great. I for one had the feeling he want to attack Ragnar but didn't and saw a disappointment in him when Ragnar was shouting "Who wants to be King?"

SPOILERS Sigurd season 4 part 1 recap

Sigurd is not much shown in the series until he bullied Siggy his big brother Bjorn's his child. After seeing Harbard who he doesn't like he sets a trap for Harbard by fetching his mom. Harbard makes love to someone else and this broke Aslaug. 

Sigurd gets Harbard away from Kattegat. When he find Siggy dead in the river he goes to Aslaug who doesn´t know where he is talking about wasted as she was. 

When we meet the grown-up version of Sigurd it is at the cabin. He is also one of them who wants to kill his father after what had happened to the settlement in Wessex. He thinks Ragnar betray a lot of people. When he meet Ragnar who surprisingly returned to Kattegat he is also challenged to kill his father but don´t want to do it.

Hvitserk is asking a few times if he is going to Paris with Ragnar. When Ragnar decides that Hvitserk is at the age to go and sail with Ragnar to Paris. He gets his arm ring. During that trip, he is only allowed to watch and learn.

We see Ubbe grow up this season in many ways. Ubbe is the one who hunt down Floki and arrest him after his break out attempt. Ubbe is at the age to go and sail with him to Paris.

If you were wondering why I did recaps and didn’t announce them on social media here will be the answer to that. I have been to many places in The Netherlands lately and have discovered and learned a lot of things.

I have been to Middelburg city on Walcheren (Walcria) to read some old books about Vikings, and do research about Walcria and the Vikings in The Netherlands, I went to Texel twice (Texla) to find out more about what they did there and in Friesland (Frisia) amazed as I was what they did.

Then I went to Den Oever (in the Viking time this was also Texla) to the Dutch Viking Information Centre (VIC) I suggested my theory about Rorik and Ragnar and he told me it could be the same person because they couldn’t write at that time. So my theory still could be right. I will post a lot of things and pictures in links later. In Den Oever, they have a good collection of Vikings coins, swords, a boat, clothing. In Den Oever, they told me to do my next stop in Leiden.

So I went to Leiden to the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (http://www.rmo.nl/english) the next stop in my journey to find what we know about the Vikings. They had also a good collection of interesting objects. The treasure of Den Oever is also there, but they have also a fibula from Wijk bij Duurstede (Dorestadum).

Next, stop Groningen, where I went to the Strip museum, translated Comic book museum (http://www.stripmuseum.nl/index_english.html). You might wonder what has this to do with your Viking journey funny fact is that they have a small piece replica tapestry of the battle of Hastings made by Bayeux. It is the battle between William the second and King Harald beginning of the Norman conquest 1066. They have also a large collection about Eric the Northman a comic book.

Today I went to Eindhoven (Betua) PreHistorisch Dorp, The Prehistoric Village while there is no real evidence that they were there they found out Woensel nearby Eindhoven named after Wodan another name for Odin.  There they found a talisman in a grave of a child they think it is from the Vikings. I learned a lot today in this village. I learned how to write with a feather like the monks did, I learned about different herbs in a garden, to make a fire with stones, arrows with a wet stone, cups from clay, how loam could be used for making a blade or axe, to make wooden dowel pins for boats, braid, swirl a bracelet, rope making. I have learned a lot of things today.

What they did to keep old things in Eindhoven is that if you want to break a house down the law tells you to do archaeological research on the space before you are going to build again. So if anything is found they have proof once they found something Viking related.

The Viking house they have built is found in the border between Eindhoven, Helmond, and Den Bosch. The house dated from 950 AD. It has a great hall and you can see it in a boat figure. They think it is a forerunner for a castle they built later on that ground.

Vikings in The Netherlands

I did some research about the Vikings in the Netherlands I went to Middelburg to the Zeeuwse Bibliotheek and found the most amazing books collection about Northmen and Vikings. I had some very old books in my hand. This blog will be mostly in English but also contain Dutch (one scald) and I will try to translate as much as I can. 

Today I went to Friesland and the Fries museum (Frisia in the Viking time) and Texel (Texla or Tesla in the Viking time). From Texel, I don't have much information but will be back soon. What I do know about Texel is that it is an isle now you can see on picture #1 it wasn't separate yet in the Viking time. I know they raid this place as well I am not sure what and why because I was there too short.  I haven't been to the Viking Information Centre in The Netherlands yet I have planned this trip very soon.

Today I start with a Dutch Skald I found in the search of the Vikings in The Netherlands.

Gevuld waren ze met krijgers

En witte schilden,

And Frankish swords 

This is a scald from the attacks / raids the Vikings did in The Netherlands.

Some of the books I used are doubting that the Vikings even where in The Netherlands because they didn't find treasures yet and we only know mentions in foreign books but not in our own books from the Vikings.

It also suggests that there is a lot of history untold or hidden. But the books after the years 1997 until now do know that the Vikings in the Netherlands existed this is because the first Viking treasure was found in 1996 in Wieringen. The year linked to this is about 850 AD. Although we now know that the first raids were 689-695 AD in Dorestadum(Dorestad, Wijk bij Duurstede) these years are better known for the battle of Dorestadum. It was totally burned to the ground there was nothing left in that city.   

Why did the Vikings come to The Netherlands you may ask. They hunted bears, wild swine, and wild animals. They also loved our fur and salted cod. If there was no profit they sold the fur for big money to others to compensate the damage or the profit. 

During the Vikings period in The Netherlands, we know that there were three regions. those three regions are Frisia, Betua and Walcria now known as:

Frisia: Friesland, Noord-Holland (North-Holland), Zuid-Holland (South-Holland)  

Betua: De Betuwe region in Noord-Brabant (Northen-Brabant)    

Walacra: is an isle in Zealand Walcheren.

We had three important cities at that time. Trajectum or Witaberg (Utrecht), Dorestadum (Dorestad now Wijk bij Duurstede) and Walacra (Isle Walcheren Zealand)

In the publication, I am using for this piece it tells us that the city Nijmegen called Nymegen or Numegen at that time it meant New megen (for megen is no translation know) it is possible that this was what the Vikings called Nyon but that could also be in Frankia now better known as France. People from the Betuwe were known as Bataven or Batavieren (Batavian). 

It is also said Noviomagus (Nijmegen) and Dorestadum (Wijk bij Duurstede) where nearby but that is also said from Dorestadum (Wijk bij Duurstede) and Trajectum (Utrecht). Almere was known as La Mer or La fleur (France or Frankish names)

Walacra was an isle the Vikings used this place as a den of robbers. It has two names in that time Den of robbers and Isle of strangers. The popularity by  the Vikings for this particular isle was because it said that during bad weather you couldn't see the isle and you couldn't see where the sea began or end I saw that today on the isle Texel as you can see on picture #1

From Walacra, you could go to Witla (doesn't exist anymore although it could be the isle of Schouwen also Zealand) Trajectum or Witaberg (Utrecht) and Dorestadum (Dorestad, Wijk bij Duurstede).

While Walacra was known as a place of robbers Dorestadum was known for his trade. Two sea routes were known from Dorestadum one to Scandinavia and one to England. Trajectum (Utrecht) was known for the churches and several peace treaties in return of land. One of the little churches in Trajectum (Utrecht) is known as The little church of Dilbert. 

In that time, we know three different coin makers. The FR Isunmarum, the ones from Dorestad and the DR Ide Demariën

We see raids in different cities in The Netherlands.
689-695 AD battle of Dorestadum
834, 835, 837 AD Dorestadum was attacked by the Vikings.
837, 839 AD Walacra and Witla were attacked
873 AD Oostergo
880-890 AD they raid Deventer, Zutphen, and Asselt (Limburg The Netherlands)
In 885 AD, there was an inventory list was made by the church.
1006 AD Tiel
1007 AD Utrecht

What we see in this time period is that the Vikings left and came back. In those periods, they didn't raid it could be that they concurred land or they could be found in Walacra and Dorestadum because we know there were settlements both on the isle and in the city. We do know that both Frisians and Vikings switched sides so it could be that they didn't raid and didn't left The Netherlands but settled here and stayed here to build boats, armies, trade, and do farming.

The one thing I kept questioning is how can I place Ragnar's sons into all of this or Ragnar himself. The answer is not that simple because The Netherlands was forked in Earldoms.

What we do know is that Rorik mentioned in the battle of Dorestad. Rorik is also mentioned to be accompanied with Ubbe, Halfdan and Inguar (Ivar the Boneless) not in that battle but in Frisia where the expeditions began for them to different directions. The Earldoms were given by Rorik at that time and all we know is that Ubbe was Earl from Frisia later called Duke. In the books, he is also linked with Walacra. 

The only question arises could Rorik be Ragnar? Why do you think I came across a very interesting story about Rorik I could be wrong because Ragnar died before 865 but it could be a twisted story or the dates were twisted I am not sure. 

In July 865 Pagus Isaliae (de Ijsselgouw area between the Lek river and the Ijssel river) it was just after the attacks of Paris by the Vikings Rorik came back in The Netherlands at that place and stayed there to repair ships and build a new army this one is also linked with Ubbe the Duke of the Frisian. In this defeat, Rorik disappeared from the books. The sources talk about:

1. Possibly killed because of the defeat
2. Ashamed by his raiding crew that he disappeared, or his crew killed him
3. He had ashamed his own name and disappeared 

We saw this happening with Ragnar season 3 episode 10 and in season 4 episode 7 and episode 10. Or is it just the TV series that tried to put Ragnar in the history of Rorik with a different time. Like I said before it is all history and there was no written word yet by the Vikings. The books already suggest that they left stories out and put things into history.

Halfdan and Ivar went from Walacra to England. Ubbe has done many expeditions between England and The Netherlands from both Frisia and Walacra. He got defeated or it is also said he chased away in The Netherlands just before he attacked York together with Ivar 867 AD. There he was known as Ubbo dux Fresciorum or Ubbo dux Fresonum. So one fact we know is he was duke of Frisia.

Rollo is also mentioned in the books. He was in The Netherlands, and when duke he could have The Netherlands but rejected the country simply because when he first was there it was less land and a bit swampy. By the time he got it offered it had become more land then he was there the first time.

Fact The Netherlands was once attacked on four sides by the Vikings. One fleet from France, One fleet from Germany, One fleet from the North sea and one fleet from Belgium.

Bjorn Ironside was around 855 AD in The Netherlands was in Walcheren together with the other brothers. Maastricht, Nijmegen, Dorestad, Tiel, Oosterbeek and Utrecht are the places Bjorn has been. Oosterbeek he was there as Bjorn with Ragnar I assume and not as Bjorn Ironside.
