Clive Standen dedication to a few characters with Vikings Rollo

Kattegat

At the time Siggy was killed by Harbard’s hand on the ice, Rollo was unaware. After her death, she was named a ‘hero’, because she had saved Ragnar’s children from the ice. When Rollo came home, he heard the news of her passing and was heart-broken. He fell into a slump, unable to move on and went through the days drinking his sorrows away. He was seen as a traitor, so why was he still alive by the Gods?

When Lagertha visited him after she returned in Kattegat from Hedeby, she found Rollo completely wasted in his home. She woke him up in a specific way only she knew, due her experience from the past. Their past went way back to their teenage years. Back then, Rollo hadn’t known that Lagertha would choose for his brother Ragnar, one of the many suiters she could choose from.
Lagertha had always been perfect in many ways. Everyone in the small village loved Lagertha since she was young, as she was fierce and strong. Already a true shield-maiden at a young age.

Rollo was the youngest of the family Lothbrok. He had met her after a training session in another village, about an hour on horseback away from where he lived. She had loved Rollo when she had seen him train. He had been kind to her. His fighting skill had looked as if he was a great warrior, but during battle he hadn’t been able to fight her. She liked the idea of being strong, that she could handle anything and if she wanted, to leave every men behind and be on her own.

“Rollo, wake up. I’m here now. Mind telling me why you’re throwing your life away?” Though not completely awake, Rollo heard her question, yet didn’t reply right. Instead his body started to tremble. Lagertha saw it happen and stroking with one hand through his hair. “It’s alright. Cry. It will help you cope with Siggy’s death.” At her words, Rollo turned around. She saw his tears and tried to comfort him. After his body stopped trembling and she saw that he cried no more, she continued to speak.

“I have to tell you something. We’re leaving for Paris in a few days with Ragnar. Rest for a bit. Come to me in a few hours and we can discuss how to get you back on track.” Finally, Rollo replied. “I don’t know why I’m still alive. My own people hate me. I’ve disappointed Ragnar. I’m a traitor. Why don’t you just leave, considering I’m a piece of trash anyway. I’m better off dead.”

Lagertha didn’t want to hear any of it and said: “our Gods don’t want you at their side yet, since you still have so much to live for. I don’t believe you truly mean the words you’re saying. I will see you later. Bjorn will be there. He needs you, since you can teach him so many things still. I mean it, Rollo. I will see you in a few hours. I will send Bjorn to fetch you.” Rollo turned around, gave her a kiss and fell into a restless sleep.

His dream following the conversation nearly seemed real to him. He was told in his dream that Harbard first thought that he was the God Odin, but he turned out to be Loki. He knew what happened to Siggy. To his surprise Siggy told him that, after his talk with Lagertha, he needed to come to the lake. There he would be promised a future, a life better than the one he had now.

After he woke from his strange dream, he went to the seer before heading to Lagertha. “What lies in my future? What does this dream mean?” he asked. The seer, who knew exactly what his future held and what the dream meant, gave him a vague answer. “If you know what the future held for you in Paris, you’d be dancing on the beach, naked. You shall go to Paris, meet princes and that is where your future lies.”

After meeting the seer he met up with Lagertha, having bumped into Bjorn along the way. Lagertha wanted that, for as long as they were still in Kattegat, he taught Bjorn to improve his sword technique. “You will do that for your son, I mean, nephew, won’t you?”

When Rollo heard this, he understood the secret she carried, as the family had always thought that Bjorn was the son of Ragnar. Would Bjorn turn out to be his son after all?
Lagertha saw what was on his mind. “Don’t you dare even think or talk about it!”

Was he still dreaming? Wake up, Rollo! For God’s sake, wake up!
He was shocked by the discovery that he might be a father. He didn’t understand any of it. The seer had told him that his future lies in Paris, not in Kattegat. Was he supposed to keep Bjorn in Paris as well? Was all of it a distraction to give him a sense of purpose in his life? To change his fate? What did she want with this message?

He went to the frozen lake where Siggy had died while saving Ragnar’s other children. But nothing happened.

Before they went to Paris, he trained with Bjorn every day. And every day he went to the lake. But every time he came home without anything happening. To great displeasure of Rollo, as he had expected to see a sign of life from Siggy, so she could go to Paris with him. But time and time again he was disappointed. His clinging hope to see her was a reason to forget about her, for the pain was too much to bear. He tried desperately to forget, but he found that he couldn’t.

In Paris, he fell down from some meters high, because he got distracted by a Francoise. Then something strange happened.
As he fell, he was lifted up and the lake in which he had fallen froze. While the lake froze, he saw Siggy’s face “Siggy why did you turn up in this lake?” Her face faded as the ice became thicker. She held a sword in her hand. After the lake was frozen solid, Rollo walked towards her on the ice to grab the sword from her. When he did, he suddenly found himself in a different time and place.

Camelot

Gawain took the sword Excalibur from Excalibur’s hand after the lake was frozen solid, so he could give the sword to Arthur. Gawain had to take the sword instead of Merlin, for he kept the lake frozen with his magic. Gawain got the sword. When he reached Merlin to hand over the sword to Arthur, when they went back to the city of Camelot, he noticed that a large crowd had gathered around Arthur, and that he had gained a large number of new warriors in the main time.
Gawain was asked to give each and every one the right training, so they could form an army together with Arthur. He had already started training the new recruits, some of them where knights of the round table. Now he had to train more and in different forms. He was knighted that night for his courage and as trainer of the royal guard.

As he sat at the banquet during one of the parties at Arthur’s, his eyes fell on Ragnelle. Ragnelle stood out, but not because she was beautiful. Gawain didn’t care much for her looks. He expected that she was cursed. By marrying her he sought to break the curse. He had always thought this, but when the curse wasn’t lifted he held no regrets. She was honest and loyal to him. She did everything he asked for.

After they had lived in sovereignty for a couple of years, Gawain found a potion to lift the curse. He brought it to Ragnelle. Finally, after all those years, the curse was lifted. While he fell asleep, something happened that no one had ever dared to dream. He woke up next to a gorgeous woman.
Unfortunately, Arthur needed him to defend the castle from king Lot. After king Lot was defeated, he went back to Ragnelle, who was glad that he hadn’t died during the war. Mostly because king Lot had a strong and loyal army and king Lot was no push over either. After Ragnelle had given him a warm welcome, he went to bed for he was exhausted. In his dreams, he relived the war. He took his sword to attack, but noticed soon enough that he was fighting in a different kind of war. A war he had never fought, but used a strategy that he had used during the war they just won.

Nottingham

After Archer had been captured, he was freed by his brothers although his brother and half-brother. Yet, they all had to fight a war with the oldest sheriff of Nottingham. Isabella had asked the help of Robin Hood and Guy Gisborne. They couldn’t refuse her call of need, the sister of Guy. What they didn’t know, was that Archer would lead them straight into a trap.

Archer realized that the trap wouldn’t work and that he needed to save Robin and Guy (his brother and half-brother) from his sister Isabella. However, after they were freed, Archer had to learn to cope with the fact that his brothers were dead. He finally had found his family. He wanted to create a bond with this family of outlaws. Now he felt betrayed by his sister, she who killed his brother and later his half-brother with a poisoned sword.

After he joined the outlaws, he was given the next task: burying Alan. He gave a funeral. Alan lying in a boat on the land that was set ablaze by Archer’s burning arrow. The boat was consumed by flames and disappeared.

Paris

Lots of boats were set ablaze for the funeral of the first Vikings who didn’t survive the raid in Paris by doing that they will please the Gods in Valhalla, as that was tradition during that time. Rollo was together with his comrades during the funeral, the first Vikings who didn’t survive the war in Paris.

Ragnar had new ideas, but first he had to process this great loss. When Rollo heard that his brother was sick and on his deathbed, he rushed to his brother’s side. There he was laid in a closed coffin. Everyone was present to mourn. However, it was all a trick to get into Paris and start a successful raid.

After that raid, someone needed to stay behind. A lot volunteered, but Rollo had a motive to stay behind in Paris. Weeping he had said his goodbyes to Lagertha and Bjorn. But when his brother gone, he was already on his way to negotiate with the princess’ father. He would betray his brother again, just like he had done before.

Vikings: SPOILERS season 4B episode 11 The outsider

http://www.lipstickalley.com/showthread.php/973730-Vikings-Season-4-Official-Thread/page65

Hail Vikings,

I am back and so is Vikings. Before I start to tell you how I found the première of Vikings season 4B. I will tell you this is only once. Please give it time because in The Netherlands the première will be somewhere in January at Film 1 paid cable television. Dates yet to announces so keep watching this space for more info.

Welcome to a new episode of Vikings. I was wondering what to expect for this first episode. I have seen so many scenes already so it couldn't surprise me just yet. Nevertheless, I have loved the first episode.

If it comes to mythology I'm pleased to see that Ragnar took it to the next level in comparing him to Odin by hanging himself to the tree. Even Odin refused him to die is another explanation. The scene with Floki is also about dead it seems it is still the theme of the episodes.

Even when the sons of Ragnar, dared by Ragnar to kill him no one stands up at that moment. It seems if Ubbe tried but didn´t it was nice to see that he stepped up.

Ivar seems to have the same emotion as Ragnar, only Ivar got them stronger in the scene when he is making love to Margrethe we see every emotion coming by and that without a single word it was magical. Ivar has a mixture of strength within him that no one expect. In the forest scene, later we see that the only one who expect him to be that strong is after he threw the axe to is Hvitserk.

Vikings: How to recognize a trading partner in the Viking period

http://www.waverijn.info/images/Info/Pages/17/Vikingen.htm Dutch source

Hail Vikings,

When I went to the Museum Meermanno the museum itself is about books. So when I got asked to go to a reading about graphic I didn´t expect the outcome of that reading. It was about the Chinese art Kai-awase Symbolon. those based on a love story where you get one-half of a shell and you need to find the other half. It is like memory but there is a difference both shells have different paintings inside. But enough about that. What has this to do with Vikings or trading I will tell you.

We know that in the time of the Vikings they had coins. In The Netherlands, they found half a coin or a quarter coin. This brings me to the story of the trading partner and the reading that I went to. At the reading, they told the coins had a real trading system at that time.
If you got a piece of land that you bought from a trading partner, and you have particular agreements with that partner, for instance, he kept the watch over your land while you were gone, how did he keep his promise to watch over the land? How did you know it was the right trading partner? How did they do that in those times?

The answer is given in this way: They cut the coins in half or quarter. If you got half or quarter a coin in your possession and the trading partner has half or three-quarter a coin it fits into a whole coin. So if you came back and you showed them the piece of the coin they could easily fit it. If it fits the agreement was that it was given back to you.

This was also with family how to recognize family when not together or from another country it was your identification coin that would show if someone died or came to visit.

Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship Videos

All videos made by Tamara Bakx

Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship

Hail Vikings,

Today 14/10/2017 I went to the symposium I talked about in the blog from 07-10-2017
https://tamarabakx.blogspot.nl/2016/10/vikings-month-of-history.html Before I start I had some problems with my phone so my notebook didn't save my notes. Unfortunately, I can't recall everything from the day. So sorry if I forgot something or that my photos are bad.

I had to come early and see the preparations from Thomas Finderup for the afternoon chop/splitting and carving reading so there were only a few persons on the Bataviawerf. After his preparations, I went to see the different aspects that you have on a ship like the sails and the woodwork maker. That was before I started a guided tour. A guided tour is the opportunity to ask your questions and can take up to two and a half hours and you could choose to leave when you like.

As the tour started I had one and a half hour before the symposium started so I didn´t do the guided tour maybe next time. I got distracted a lot during that tour although I choose to go on an English tour instead of the Dutch tour, not because of the guide. When we visit the `Batavia`I lost my concentration completely. The ´Batavia` a 17th-century ship with amazing woodwork and was able to see how detailed everything was. I listened to the guide but actually I wanted to explore and find out myself. Although I was able to do that I  was thinking about the boatbuilding of the Vikings when the guide told some part of the ship is a construction invented by the Vikings. My distraction was gone immediately I heard the word Vikings and the concentration follow the guide was completely there again.

After my lunch, the symposium started I got seated next to the team of the 'Kamper Kogge' and they are also responsible for lifting the wrecked ship the 'IJssel Kogge' at first when they had lifted the wrecked ship I thought it was a Viking ship. It has the same plank structure on the outside as a Viking ship. But unfortunately, it isn't. They haven't found a Viking shipwreck in The Netherlands just yet.

The readings are very interesting and learned a lot about preserving methods and reconstructions. How they do it but also if you can imagine what the difference is in 2016 they only build a ship in a couple of months until 2 years depends on what kind of ship they construct from history in The Netherlands. In the Viking time, it would take years to build such a fleet to go to Paris, even if they had enough people it would take about 2 till 5 years to build only one ship. So when they concur other ships they could use that to get a greater fleet.

Left picture: Presentation Thomas Finderup Vikings iron or wooden front
Right picture: Tamara Bakx Dutch  wooden front 17th century

They always have used mythology on the ships. That is how they recognized from which country you came from. That is how they recognize the Vikings because they used the same front and back on the boat with different mythology themes. In front always an animal like a dragon, it depends on the country mythology, under the dragon, there was some mythology.

He also talked about the 'Oseberg' they found it almost completely on a burial site. On that burial site, they found the tools to make a ship it could be a warrior as well because of the axes they found. They found multiple on multiple sides. He also talked about the ritual that comes with a Vikings dead and how amazed they really where to find a lot of boats intact while they knew that a Viking boat were burned with the dead in it. They also find two warrior women on one of the sides. They had a lot of axes and tools to make weapons.

After the talk, we went outside to split and chop a tree and get different demos with different axes. He also told how they made planks for the boat. When finding oak wood they use frames on the tree to find fitting wood for a boat. Those frames used to cut the tree as economic as possible. They burn or steam the wood in the right positions. Did you know they only need to get rid of the bark to see if the tree was good enough for preserving, without disease, and if the wood was hard enough to build a boat?

I needed to think about Ragnar when he introduced Bjorn to Floki where we see exactly the same thing happen. The presentation I needed to think about Floki and how we see him as boat builder and warrior. If the burial was from Floki it would look like the same as Thomas Finderup told us.The part of the mythology I liked as well. There are a few stories about boats in Norse mythology Naglfar is also used in the presentation a ship that exists only of toe and fingernails. The other ones are Hringhorni, Skíðblaðnir and Sessrúmnir.

Vikings: My journey to the Vikings in The Netherlands

Hail Vikings,

I learned a lot today about history. I went to Utrecht (Trajectum in the time of the Vikings). I went to an archeological find under the Dom Tower and church. Everything I write about is from the tourguide point of view. The first thing we found out that there where archeological finds earlier but it wasn't relevant at that time so they destroyed it or threw it away. That is why there is not so much to be found about Vikings. It answered my question from last week. Archeologists did find a lot about the period before the Vikings. That is why the Dutch learn about the Roman period and then go on to the 17th century.

In The Netherlands, there was a difference between the Frisia culture and the ones that lived below Trajectum. Frisia wasn't that important according to the people who lived below Trajectum. Why because Frisia was poor and where farmers. Trajectum was rich. Trajectum had his first Heathen church build around 300 they assume. When Christianity came they placed a Christian church above a heathen church. Like we see in most countries what happened when Christianity took over. Now that church has the style gothic. But it all started with a roman fortress. We know that Ubbe was called Duke of Frisia. (From blog 17-05-2016)

http://members.home.nl/keesdebrouwer/vikingen/06_veroveringen.htm

But back to the Vikings we know from different books about that period that Vikings have been coming from the side of Frisia until they went to Paris they came from the North side of The Netherlands before Paris. After Paris, they came through Germany and Belgium. When they came from the north they are described as Barbarians or Pirates. When they came out Germany and Belgium they assumed it where traders.

They found two skeletons in their burial and they are eager to find out who they are because they aren't allowed just yet. Permission to go on with the digging and to find out more isn't there yet, this is because they are experimenting with how to preserve the digging in a way that everyone is able to visit it. Unfortunately, they don't know yet how. They actually hope to dig the whole Roman period but if they are allowed to dig further maybe they will find a little more about the attack from the Vikings in and around the church. They have layers of ground they dig for the first time and those layers of ground could prove something totally different and could show us what truly happened. They dig from donations.

Vikings: Month of History

http://www.osebergvikingskip.no/documents/bildedagbok.php?title=thomas-finderup-tar-over-etter-egil-mikkelsen&entry_id=1280322991 Photo source: © Jørgen Kirsebom

Hail Vikings,

In The Netherlands, October is the month of History. When I received the newsletter about this I went to see how much events about the Vikings I could find or I would see in this month. I came back very disappointed by the first things I saw. In total three events, I came across that had to do with Vikings. Things I already had done and all in one weekend. But the last event tricked me on the 14th of October.

I already knew that this year theme is about borders between lands, sea and everything to do with those borders. About that last event, I found. It is a symposium about Historical reconstructions of ships. The theme of this symposium is Authentic and Sustainability. At first, it has nothing to do with Vikings for one exception. Later I will tell you about the exception.

I will tell you why in our History the Vikings are not that important because it is not the Dutch history our history starts in the Dutch Golden Age the United East Indian Company time 17th century (V.O.C.) . For me also an interesting subject. But enough about that.

When I saw the leaflet surprised as I was to see that there are two presentations by Thomas Finderup. One about the reconstruction the Viking ship 'Oseberg' and one how to chop/split and carving the wood. I wouldn't want to miss this for a second. I will try to make a blog about this next week or in a fortnight.

Hail Vikings,

First of all, I like to apologize for the recap blogs I thought by now we would know a return date but unfortunately, we don´t have a date yet. The thing is that a lot of new casts introduced over the last couple of weeks.

The trailer came out during San Diego Comic-Con 22 Juli and I haven't posted it yet. so my blog isn't exactly up to date due to several reasons.

One of them is the date that Vikings will return but most of all I have seen the trailer multiple times and have seen so much that I wasn't able to write anything down because there is so much to write about the trailer already.

In the next few blogs, I will try to make it up to you so stay tuned for new Vikings blogs. The blogs will come out every Thursday at 13:36 PDT
Sometimes my posts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and TUMBLR are faster feel free to follow me over there as well.
