Vikings: SPOILERS season 4B episode 11 The outsider

http://www.lipstickalley.com/showthread.php/973730-Vikings-Season-4-Official-Thread/page65

Hail Vikings,

I am back and so is Vikings. Before I start to tell you how I found the première of Vikings season 4B. I will tell you this is only once. Please give it time because in The Netherlands the première will be somewhere in January at Film 1 paid cable television. Dates yet to announces so keep watching this space for more info.

Welcome to a new episode of Vikings. I was wondering what to expect for this first episode. I have seen so many scenes already so it couldn't surprise me just yet. Nevertheless, I have loved the first episode.

If it comes to mythology I'm pleased to see that Ragnar took it to the next level in comparing him to Odin by hanging himself to the tree. Even Odin refused him to die is another explanation. The scene with Floki is also about dead it seems it is still the theme of the episodes.

Even when the sons of Ragnar, dared by Ragnar to kill him no one stands up at that moment. It seems if Ubbe tried but didn´t it was nice to see that he stepped up.

Ivar seems to have the same emotion as Ragnar, only Ivar got them stronger in the scene when he is making love to Margrethe we see every emotion coming by and that without a single word it was magical. Ivar has a mixture of strength within him that no one expect. In the forest scene, later we see that the only one who expect him to be that strong is after he threw the axe to is Hvitserk.

Vikings: How to recognize a trading partner in the Viking period

http://www.waverijn.info/images/Info/Pages/17/Vikingen.htm Dutch source

Hail Vikings,

When I went to the Museum Meermanno the museum itself is about books. So when I got asked to go to a reading about graphic I didn´t expect the outcome of that reading. It was about the Chinese art Kai-awase Symbolon. those based on a love story where you get one-half of a shell and you need to find the other half. It is like memory but there is a difference both shells have different paintings inside. But enough about that. What has this to do with Vikings or trading I will tell you.

We know that in the time of the Vikings they had coins. In The Netherlands, they found half a coin or a quarter coin. This brings me to the story of the trading partner and the reading that I went to. At the reading, they told the coins had a real trading system at that time.
If you got a piece of land that you bought from a trading partner, and you have particular agreements with that partner, for instance, he kept the watch over your land while you were gone, how did he keep his promise to watch over the land? How did you know it was the right trading partner? How did they do that in those times?

The answer is given in this way: They cut the coins in half or quarter. If you got half or quarter a coin in your possession and the trading partner has half or three-quarter a coin it fits into a whole coin. So if you came back and you showed them the piece of the coin they could easily fit it. If it fits the agreement was that it was given back to you.

This was also with family how to recognize family when not together or from another country it was your identification coin that would show if someone died or came to visit.

Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship Videos

VIKINGS: Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship

VIKINGS: Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship: Hail Vikings, Today 14/10/2017 I went to the symposium I talked about in the blog from 07-10-2017 https://tamarabakx.blogspot.nl/2016...

Vikings: Bataviawerf, Oseberg Vikingship

Hail Vikings,

Today 14/10/2017 I went to the symposium I talked about in the blog from 07-10-2017
https://tamarabakx.blogspot.nl/2016/10/vikings-month-of-history.html Before I start I had some problems with my phone so my notebook didn't save my notes. Unfortunately, I can't recall everything from the day. So sorry if I forgot something or that my photos are bad.

I had to come early and see the preparations from Thomas Finderup for the afternoon chop/splitting and carving reading so there were only a few persons on the Bataviawerf. After his preparations, I went to see the different aspects that you have on a ship like the sails and the woodwork maker. That was before I started a guided tour. A guided tour is the opportunity to ask your questions and can take up to two and a half hours and you could choose to leave when you like.

As the tour started I had one and a half hour before the symposium started so I didn´t do the guided tour maybe next time. I got distracted a lot during that tour although I choose to go on an English tour instead of the Dutch tour, not because of the guide. When we visit the `Batavia`I lost my concentration completely. The ´Batavia` a 17th-century ship with amazing woodwork and was able to see how detailed everything was. I listened to the guide but actually I wanted to explore and find out myself. Although I was able to do that I  was thinking about the boatbuilding of the Vikings when the guide told some part of the ship is a construction invented by the Vikings. My distraction was gone immediately I heard the word Vikings and the concentration follow the guide was completely there again.

After my lunch, the symposium started I got seated next to the team of the 'Kamper Kogge' and they are also responsible for lifting the wrecked ship the 'IJssel Kogge' at first when they had lifted the wrecked ship I thought it was a Viking ship. It has the same plank structure on the outside as a Viking ship. But unfortunately, it isn't. They haven't found a Viking shipwreck in The Netherlands just yet.

The readings are very interesting and learned a lot about preserving methods and reconstructions. How they do it but also if you can imagine what the difference is in 2016 they only build a ship in a couple of months until 2 years depends on what kind of ship they construct from history in The Netherlands. In the Viking time, it would take years to build such a fleet to go to Paris, even if they had enough people it would take about 2 till 5 years to build only one ship. So when they concur other ships they could use that to get a greater fleet.

Left picture: Presentation Thomas Finderup Vikings iron or wooden front
Right picture: Tamara Bakx Dutch  wooden front 17th century

They always have used mythology on the ships. That is how they recognized from which country you came from. That is how they recognize the Vikings because they used the same front and back on the boat with different mythology themes. In front always an animal like a dragon, it depends on the country mythology, under the dragon, there was some mythology.

He also talked about the 'Oseberg' they found it almost completely on a burial site. On that burial site, they found the tools to make a ship it could be a warrior as well because of the axes they found. They found multiple on multiple sides. He also talked about the ritual that comes with a Vikings dead and how amazed they really where to find a lot of boats intact while they knew that a Viking boat were burned with the dead in it. They also find two warrior women on one of the sides. They had a lot of axes and tools to make weapons.

After the talk, we went outside to split and chop a tree and get different demos with different axes. He also told how they made planks for the boat. When finding oak wood they use frames on the tree to find fitting wood for a boat. Those frames used to cut the tree as economic as possible. They burn or steam the wood in the right positions. Did you know they only need to get rid of the bark to see if the tree was good enough for preserving, without disease, and if the wood was hard enough to build a boat?

I needed to think about Ragnar when he introduced Bjorn to Floki where we see exactly the same thing happen. The presentation I needed to think about Floki and how we see him as boat builder and warrior. If the burial was from Floki it would look like the same as Thomas Finderup told us.The part of the mythology I liked as well. There are a few stories about boats in Norse mythology Naglfar is also used in the presentation a ship that exists only of toe and fingernails. The other ones are Hringhorni, Skíðblaðnir and Sessrúmnir.

Vikings: My journey to the Vikings in The Netherlands

Hail Vikings,

I learned a lot today about history. I went to Utrecht (Trajectum in the time of the Vikings). I went to an archeological find under the Dom Tower and church. Everything I write about is from the tourguide point of view. The first thing we found out that there where archeological finds earlier but it wasn't relevant at that time so they destroyed it or threw it away. That is why there is not so much to be found about Vikings. It answered my question from last week. Archeologists did find a lot about the period before the Vikings. That is why the Dutch learn about the Roman period and then go on to the 17th century.

In The Netherlands, there was a difference between the Frisia culture and the ones that lived below Trajectum. Frisia wasn't that important according to the people who lived below Trajectum. Why because Frisia was poor and where farmers. Trajectum was rich. Trajectum had his first Heathen church build around 300 they assume. When Christianity came they placed a Christian church above a heathen church. Like we see in most countries what happened when Christianity took over. Now that church has the style gothic. But it all started with a roman fortress. We know that Ubbe was called Duke of Frisia. (From blog 17-05-2016)

http://members.home.nl/keesdebrouwer/vikingen/06_veroveringen.htm

But back to the Vikings we know from different books about that period that Vikings have been coming from the side of Frisia until they went to Paris they came from the North side of The Netherlands before Paris. After Paris, they came through Germany and Belgium. When they came from the north they are described as Barbarians or Pirates. When they came out Germany and Belgium they assumed it where traders.

They found two skeletons in their burial and they are eager to find out who they are because they aren't allowed just yet. Permission to go on with the digging and to find out more isn't there yet, this is because they are experimenting with how to preserve the digging in a way that everyone is able to visit it. Unfortunately, they don't know yet how. They actually hope to dig the whole Roman period but if they are allowed to dig further maybe they will find a little more about the attack from the Vikings in and around the church. They have layers of ground they dig for the first time and those layers of ground could prove something totally different and could show us what truly happened. They dig from donations.

Vikings: Month of History

http://www.osebergvikingskip.no/documents/bildedagbok.php?title=thomas-finderup-tar-over-etter-egil-mikkelsen&entry_id=1280322991 Photo source: © Jørgen Kirsebom

Hail Vikings,

In The Netherlands, October is the month of History. When I received the newsletter about this I went to see how much events about the Vikings I could find or I would see in this month. I came back very disappointed by the first things I saw. In total three events, I came across that had to do with Vikings. Things I already had done and all in one weekend. But the last event tricked me on the 14th of October.

I already knew that this year theme is about borders between lands, sea and everything to do with those borders. About that last event, I found. It is a symposium about Historical reconstructions of ships. The theme of this symposium is Authentic and Sustainability. At first, it has nothing to do with Vikings for one exception. Later I will tell you about the exception.

I will tell you why in our History the Vikings are not that important because it is not the Dutch history our history starts in the Dutch Golden Age the United East Indian Company time 17th century (V.O.C.) . For me also an interesting subject. But enough about that.

When I saw the leaflet surprised as I was to see that there are two presentations by Thomas Finderup. One about the reconstruction the Viking ship 'Oseberg' and one how to chop/split and carving the wood. I wouldn't want to miss this for a second. I will try to make a blog about this next week or in a fortnight.

Who wants to be King?

source: https://www.instagram.com/p/BKfwUr6gna-/?taken-by=travisfimmelpictures

Hail Vikings,

The title says it all we are going to talk about the possibilities of Who could be King and who wants to be king.

The difference between the two is not very simple. We have a group that could be king and we have a few who desire power and want to be king, but what if the burden isn´t taken by anyone or everyone it becomes chaos.Chaos the seer foretold or chaos by the meaning of Ragnarök.What will be the most important thing of ruling something like Kattegat?
Because Ragnar disappeared, Aslaug has ruled Kattegat that is for sure especially when we see how she talks to Bjorn. Bjorn is her messenger to the other brothers in the cabin nothing more like that. We see in that same expression of Bjorn that he got irritated by her. Why didn't he attack Aslaug while Ragnar was away is he afraid that one of his brothers would avenge her by killing him?

So who could be king?
  • Aslaug who is already ruling Kattegat while Ragnar was away
  • Bjorn the oldest son of Ragnar (The first heir because he is the oldest)
  • Lagertha who is already ruling another country and lived in Kattegat and knows how to rule or Astrid her new lover.
  • Rollo who wants the same power as Ragnar?
  • Floki has failed once in his operation in France but could rule in his insanity?
  • Ubbe or Hitsverk
  • Sigurd who wanted to kill his father when he would return and don't do it.
  • Ivar perhaps.
Who wants to be king?

I think it is the wrong question because everyone get's an opportunity to become king of Kattegat. The problem is that it comes with power and power is a burden you need to bear, or willing to take.  Why want Ragnar to give up his burden?

For that, we need to go way back in time to season 1. He wanted to be Earl because he needed to sail west. He didn't ask to become Earl. In season 2 we see the first difference in the power that Ragnar has and what Ragnar decide. After the betrayal of Rollo, he as earl couldn't kill his brother there was a trail but he decided that a judge needed to decide not Earl like in the first place.
In the second season, he becomes famous of his raiding's to the west and when he plots to talk to King Eckbert without having a meeting with then Earl Ingstad and King Horik, King Horik start to plot against Ragnar. When Siggy decide she wants back her power by sleeping with King Horik, Rollo tries to become more powerful than Ragnar by betrayal him to get together with Jarl Borg, Floki hates some of the decisions Ragnar made and decided it is time to switches over to Horik his team. Ragnar has only one decision to make to stay alive to kill King Horik whether it is a plot together with Floki or from Ragnar himself. He becomes King by decisions of others.
If he then goes to Paris and gets defeated multiple times it is a kings burden to keep the riches coming at that time and to succeed in raiding parties he has a burden to bear by keeping a lot from his own people. He knew that Floki killed Athelstan. He knew about the settlement in Wessex.
He has brought Kattegat to a big city that couldn´t be ruled and by misjudgment of Ragnar
consider him he is done with his kingship.

http://wellntruly.tumblr.com/post/113714801455/vikings-recap-s3e4

Aslaug

She rules Kattegat already multiple times when Ragnar was away. She rules with her own rules and won't want to change anything religion wise she loves it the old way. She is one of the main characters who is seeking for power. She even rules with Bjorn but not the way Bjorn likes.

Bjorn

Bjorn could rule Kattegat but with his choice to arrest Floki and not the favorite ruler by Ragnar because he misjudges after a few situations the one with Floki was one too many according to Ragnar. Bjorn won't kill Ragnar for Kingship because in his eyes he still is his hero. At that time it was normal that the kingship went from father to son. So Bjorn is the truth heir.

Lagertha

After she left Kattegat to divorce Ragnar she became Earl by the time she came home she had made a good fortune for her people when she killed Kalf she is the one and only ruler of Hedeby. She would love to seek revenge for what Aslaug took off her not only Ragnar but also Kattegat and Bjorn. Bjorn´s life lies in Kattegat. She would do anything to see Bjorn or herself rule in Kattegat. In my opinion, she doesn't like the idea to attack Kattegat but if that is what it takes she will attack Kattegat because of Aslaug.

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/08/14/vikings-photos-lagertha-female-lover-endgame

Astrid

New lover of Lagertha what is her power to get Lagertha  attack Kattegat for her own reason to be queen or is there something else behind Astrid's motif. Because she is a new character so we don't know what she would do.

Floki

Could Floki be king? It depends if we take back the scene that he and Aslaug had together with Harbard he could but I don't think so. Floki could be seeking that power but it will drive him to madness or into Ragnarök. When Floki is the mythic god Loki he is always seeking for power. He could be a good king if he is Loki but also a trickster. He is a natural leader in Loki but he had a say in concurring Paris and failed dramatically that turned him into madness. I don't see Floki as King but everything is possible.

Rollo

Rollo is in Paris but will he stay there and what will happen when he knows that Ragnar is trading his kingship? Is Rollo still seeking power in Kattegat? We do know he will be back together with the sons of Ragnar or if he is able to give it through will he give the favour to Bjorn. I think he will favour Bjorn. I don't know how he will react on Ivar.

http://www.imgrum.net/user/vikings.scenes/2019426644/1260383182563948367_2019426644

Ivar and the other sons of Ragnar/Aslaug

Ivar could be the next King of Kattegat but will he kill Ragnar for it at this point I don't think so, because he wants to raid Paris with Ragnar. Will he be king in the future? That is almost certain at least he will be better known as Ragnar. Together with his brother's he will be known all over the world.

Sigurd wanted Ragnar dead but doesn't have the guts to kill his dad just yet.
Ivar told Ubbe that he is soft so he definitely won't kill Ragnar.

Vikings: Comic-Con Panel

Hail Vikings,
The Viking panel of Comic-Con 2016 is up to see by History.
What can I say about this panel it has a few spoilers in it but not that much.

A little summary

  • Floki is what you like him to be: Seer, god or Floki he doesn't mind but he loved the word god.
  • Lagertha will clash with Aslaug.
  • We possibly see a new relationship between Lagertha and Ragnar but if they will be together if it was up to Hirst it would but I can only tell when we see the new season.
  • Bjorn is going to explore different countries.
  • Rollo is going on the Viking route.
  • Ragnar has hopes that one of his children will be king but he felt like they left him.
Next week I will talking about Who wants to be King?

Mythology behind the Comic-Con trailer

http://www.hngn.com/articles/37652/20140731/vikings-season-3-trailer-spoilers-seer-narrates-creepy-dark-new.htm

Hail Vikings,

Today I want to talk to you about the mythology behind the Comic-con trailer of the Vikings. But first I would like to tell you what happened towards this blog. If you put the words world will tremble, Viking Mythology or Norse mythology you find an amazing lot of stuff. When I checked this out I was glad about the information I found but also sad. When I went deeper and deeper into the material I am going to explain in this blog I found out that season 5 could be the last season. I hope not but you never know.

So our world could really be trembling if what I found out is the truth behind the trailer. I know I will take you to my perspective of the trailer and my opinions on what I found out but at least you know how I felt and maybe in a way you will find a way to explain it differently to me. Please feel free to contact me on what you think and feel free to get your own opinion. Right, back to what I wanted you to do and explain the mythology behind the trailer.

The world will tremble but wasn't it already in season 4 episode 2 "Kill the Queen" by locking up Floki in the cave like the bounding saga from Loki. The screaming of Loki already shook up the world with earthquakes. We hear Floki scream but didn't see the earthquakes. We know that Ragnar couldn't kill Floki at that time so he freed him of his suffering by releasing him from the cave.

In the first seconds of the trailer we see waving flag's this is a reference to Noatun the home of the god Njord owner of wind, sea, and fire. Here we see also a reference to Loki (Floki). There is also the myth about Baldr who is also a god of wind later in this blog I will tell you that it is most likely Baldr.

If we look further into the trembling we find the story of Thor and Loki in Jotunheim. This story told by Harbard in season 2 and again told to Ubbe, Hitsverk, Sigurd and Ivar by Ragnar in season 3. We take the story in a wider perspective we see a similarity to Ivar because they use the same carriage wagon in the trailer.

When the seer explains to Bjorn that the return of Ragnar will cause so many things like dead we see a boat lose its men and shipwreck this reference is Náströnd or better known Corpse shore we saw that also in the trailer of season 3 a beach full of corpses.

Courtesy: History Channel

The interesting part of the trailer would be the one with Aslaug and Lagertha and the sword. When I was looking for the sword I found some interesting stuff in the mythology of Aslaug when reading that mythology I found something interesting we haven't thought about it yet.

Due to an article, I came across I was eager to find out if Aslaug only betrayed or plot against Ragnar. The only question is did she betray Ragnar with Yidu, but the truth of the matter is that it started back in season 2 episode 10 with King Horik. How you might wonder I will tell you.

In the mythology of Aslaug, Aslaug wasn't called that way Kára because she was  a slave before she met Ragnar. We also find her back as Sigrún in the mythology of Sigrún and Helgi I only wonder if this part played by Ragnar or Lagertha at that point. It is amazing to see this story about love and destroy. I think we see Gram in the trailer.

Gram is given to Horik by Brunhilde, Brunhilde refers to the Sigurd story. When Ragnar kills Horik he became the owner of Gram but due to the absence of Ragnar after Paris, it is in possession by Aslaug. If it is in possession by Aslaug she could give it to Ivar by a crowning ceremony or Ivar will get it as it goes from father to son.

If Ragnar won't kill her because of Yidu. We know from the trailer that it could be Lagertha killing Aslaug for what she had done to her so that could make Lagertha Helgi as well. On the other side, we also see a bleeding Lagertha in the trailer. That could also be a child that she carries and have a miscarriage.

We see Ivar killing a few soldiers with a sword while lying on the ground. The sword could be Gram but more likely it is Tyrfing in the mythology of The lay of Grimnir. Grimnir another name for Odin.

In the separation of Yggdrasil, we see an anger burst during Ragnarök. Will this stand for the revenge of Ragnar's sons, or will this anger burst stand for a lot of war's coming this season? Will they really succeed to fade away the world into their own? This is what scared me Ragnarök because this means that it could end because Ragnarök would mean the end of the world. It is also Baldr and Loki that are in the trailer and they are definitely represented in the Ragnarök story.

The world will tremble

Courtesy: History Channel

Hail Vikings,

I called this one The world will tremble because I like the usage in the trailer itself. The world will indeed tremble when we see an army and upcoming wars between the Vikings and Paris, Vikings and Wessex, Hedeby and Kattegat, and assuming Vikings and Northumbria. I assume that Ragnar will attack Wessex if he is going to raid Paris again depends if he is going to Paris first.

Ivar wants to raid Paris with Ragnar end of season 4A. If Ragnar decided to raid Paris first this is one of the things that could become true for Ivar.
Unfortunately, if they attack Wessex first it will be the downfall of Ragnar without a doubt. We see him in a cage but this could also be a trick like we saw in Paris. Let´s hope it is a trick but I think it will resemble the dead of Ragnar.

When I saw the trailer we see and hear a couple of things, Bjorn is not so pleased when Ragnar came back when talking to the seer. He needs to curse that day the seer told Bjorn. We see Bjorn shouts charge to a very big army. I am not sure if this is already the "Heathen Army" that revenge Ragnar or if it is a resemble of one army twice as big as before. I even don't know if Ragnar will die and if he is going to die which episode.

Lagertha has different things on her mind she wants to revenge her marriage to Ragnar. She wants power and become queen because she thinks she has the right to be queen.Lagertha, therefore, attacks Kattegat it seems. I think she will do that when Ragnar is not around. Or she is doing it with permission of Ragnar. The funny thing is though when you think about it Lagertha loved by everyone why attack the place? In a recent interview, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) told it could be a different outcome than we expect. Will this be her dead sentence as well?

We see a village burning if we see Floki. It means they are raiding again like the old days. Shall we see old Floki back? The village needs to be an Arabic country because we see clothes from over there. The seer is not dead yet when we hear Bjorn and him talk so will Floki be his successor or is he still the human form of the god Loki?

Ivar declares the war to the world by this the world will tremble and everyone will know who Ivar is.

The wind of change

Hail Vikings,

The trailer arrived a month ago and I was seriously in panic. What to do with my blog it has so many aspects in it where do I start and how will I write done all this awesomeness and sadness in one. I decided to think about it and decided last week I will do it in more than one blog.

This one I will call "The wind of change", next week will be the one I call ´The world will tremble", Mythology will also be one of the series blogs I am going to make. I don't know yet what I want to call that one.

But first The wind of change.

Why did I want to call this blog the wind of change? I choose that because the first seconds of the trailer are about that. Flags flapping in the wind, we can feel and saw that there is a storm coming we don't know if this is Kattegat, Hedeby or Wessex perhaps. A stone to sharpen an axe trembles. We have seen Sigurd, Hvitserk, Ivar, and Bjorn but also King Eckbert. The change in the story from Ragnar to his sons. The change in rulers although it is a big question who wants to be king in Wessex and who will it be in Kattegat?
There are a few options here in both Wessex and Kattegat.

Wessex: Aethelwolf who is obviously the one to succeed to become king or will he be ruled out by his father king Eckbert who has his sins on Alfred? What will Magnus do when he smells the power of a true Viking or  will he be just a puppet for Ragnar? Will Magnus change the world from Christianity to heathen once again or will he join forces with his other brothers?

Kattegat: Aslaug who ruled when Ragnar was gone, Bjorn the oldest the official successor, The other boys or will it definitely will be Ivar? Will Halfdan and King Finehair rule Kattegat also one of the many possibilities. What about Lagertha I could see her rule Kattegat.

When we hear the seer speak about calamity, chaos, tragedy and dead we see different things that concerned me. Lagertha could/is pregnant again but will she lose another child, we see lots of blood in that scene, is she going to die or is it a flashback from when she was pregnant. If she becomes pregnant again is it from Ragnar because we see them kiss in the trailer or is this a dream or flashback from Ragnar. Is Ragnar still living in the past instead of the future?

Rollo is changing yet again from Christian when he married Gisla to Viking again. This is because Bjorn, Floki, Helga and Hvitserk in Paris to get safe passages for their journey to the Mediterranean Sea.

In the trailer: Rollo tells Gisla that still a part of him is Viking. To prove Rollo they show the map Bjorn has found in the cabin when he lived in the wilderness.
Lagertha seems to attack a village I think it is Kattegat. We saw boats come and go to Kattegat, Wessex and far beyond new destinies. On the boats, we see a lot of familiar faces. Halfdan, Finehair, Bjorn, Rollo, Floki, Ragnar, the sons of Ragnar. All the boats have different flags.

We see a few wars for power and raids coming up. Between Lagertha and Aslaug, Ragnar, Aella, and Eckbert, the sons of Ragnar, Aella and Eckbert. We see burning houses in a new place seems to me it is an Arabic place. Paris and Wessex get raided again. Kattegat will be under attack.
